New Bookmark Server

Monday 13th September 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL, IT

Do you work on multiple computer (like at home and at work), but wish you had a way to move the bookmarks/favorites back and forth between the two?

Deltanine has a new bookmark server.

How to use it:

1.Sign up (any old email address will do - a fake one will do but remember it because that'll be your user name).

2. Right mouse click on the blue icon and import your current bookmarks. Don't worry, no one is able to view them unless you explicitly allow it.

3. Experiment. Don't be afraid, nothing much can go wrong.

4. Integrate it with your browser. Go here and follow the directions for your browser. For Firefox install this extension and use the bookmarklet to add bookmarks.

You can now access your bookmarks from any web-enabled computer!

(Note, I respect your privacy and no information will ever be given to anyone. This is a non-profit, non-corporate site and always will be).

Police Shoot Hostage-Taker

Friday 27th August 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

"Literally, you could see his brain fly all over the place," said one man who watched the sniper's bullet find its mark.

"Like you see (such things) in a movie and you're all cool. It's not cool. It's not cool at all."

How Terrorism Works & The Big Lie

Monday 23rd August 2004 | by admin [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

Our personalities, our attitudes, our very being -- is an elaborate lie, a carefully crafted self-delusion constructed to avoid having to face a fact so terrifying it would drive us mad: Not only are we certain to die, but death could come at any moment, followed by an eternity of nothingness.

Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Ali G) Interview

Sunday 25th July 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: HUMOUR, GENERAL

The following appeared in the Guardian

Virginia Heffernan: Why is Ali G so funny?

Sacha Baron Cohen: It's a pretty simple joke, which is why even some kids get it. Essentially you have two people who look totally different - one guy dressed in an absurd yellow jumpsuit, and the other guys dressed in a suit. They're speaking in different ways, with different body language and totally different levels of intelligence.

VG: Is it more fun to play pranks on British people or Americans?

SBC: It depends on the class, actually. The best targets - the legitimate targets - are successful, powerful white men, who rule the country. And in Britain the upper class are incredibly accommodating. You can punch someone from the upper class in the face, and they'll go, "Oh, I'm dreadfully sorry." They'll never ever throw you out of the room. Here, there have been some occasions where people just are blunt, where they will say, "All right, enough is enough." Marlin Fitzwater threw Ali G out of the room. And this year Andy Rooney hated Ali G from the moment he saw him. He starts asking: "Have you done this before? Is English your first language?" And then basically tries to stop the interview after one question.

Complaints vs Bigotry

Tuesday 20th July 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS, GENERAL

On a television show here called Eating Media Lunch they received most complaints about a scene depicting the slaughter of Shrek the sheep, followed closely by an advertisement depicting a cat getting beheaded by a car's sunroof.
No complaints were received for the airing of this video of an American Apache helicopter turning Iraqis into small pieces of meat [4.5MB, graphic] on the same show.

Michael Moore claims the same thing happened after he released his 1989 movie Roger and Me, which featured a woman clubbing a rabbit to death before skinning it. Curiously he received many complaints about that footage, but none about the black man being shot by police a few minutes later.

So why was this footage [1.1MB, graphic] never aired on television?

Is it because a white American is worth more than a sheep or a cat, but black men and Iraqis are worth less?

Total Redevelopment

Wednesday 19th May 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

Deltanine is currently going under the largest redevelopment since it started. It's moving from a Movable Type system to B2evolution.

What will this mean for you?

Hopefully not too much. I'm doing my best to keep the layout very similar to what it is now. However a major feature of B2evolution is the ability to change the 'skin' of the site, so once I have got it up and running I'll design more skins, so people who don't like the look and feel can choose alternate styles.

B2evolution is also a multi-author, multi-blog system. This will mean that those who want to contribute can.

I will have a preview site up soon, however it will probably be a few weeks before I completely switch, since I'm waiting for someone to develop a way to transfer the entries from the Movable Type blog to the new one.

"Built This City" Ranked Worst

Thursday 22nd April 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

Blender magazine has named Starship's (nee Jefferson Starship, nee Jefferson Airplane) the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever.

I have to agree. I always felt slightly nauseated by this song which, disregarding the hideous melody, has no counterpoint. I truly hate that song, and back then could never understand why it was top of the chart for so long (back then I was too young and naive to understand how the charts were rigged).

Tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.

Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

"Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung were runners up.

Bill Gates No Longer Richest

Monday 05th April 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

IKEA furniture chain founder Ingvar Kamprad holds a fortune of 400 billion crowns or $53 billion. This compares with Bill Gates' mere $47 billion.

Kamprad is said to be on the frugal side, flying economy and driving an old Volvo. He keeps his wealth secure in tax-haven Switzerland.

Ha ha Bill you loser!

Caregivers and Hairdressers Happiest

Saturday 27th March 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

Despite the misconception that white-collar professionals have the best jobs and are therefore the happiest it's people in vocational careers that are the most content and fulfilled. 40% of caregivers, 32% of hairdressers and 32% of plumbers were "very happy" with their jobs compared with only 4% of accountants, pharmacists, media and estate agents, according to a survey by City and Guilds.

Factors for enjoying your work are learning new things, being your own boss, not being chained to a desk and fulfilling an ambition.

This all goes to explain why my last jobs have sucked so badly - never received promised training, more bosses than co-workers, chained to a desk, and going nowhere.
