Freedom of the Press in Iraq

Saturday 27th September 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

Just as long as that press belongs to the USA.
Al-Jazeera, based in Qatar, and al-Arabiya, in the United Arab Emirates, both have large teams of reporters in Iraq and are widely watched by locals. They frequently broadcast graphic images of the daily attacks on US soldiers, and much of their reporting has been deeply critical of the military occupation, often openly doubting the military's version of events.
Iraq's governing council is to take action against the Arabic television networks al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya for what it calls "incitement to violence" in their reporting about Iraq.S ome sources in Baghdad said the council intended to expel the two leading Arabic channels from the country for a month.

RIAA withdraws $300m lawsuit against innocent pensioner

Friday 26th September 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

Six record labels including Sony, BMG and Virgin have withdrawn a $300m lawsuit against a 66-year old woman sculptor who, it turns out, has never used file sharing software.

The RIAA said Sarah Ward was sharing 2,000 songs through the KaZaA P2P network exposing her, at $150,000 per offense, to $300,000,000 in penalties. But not only had she never downloaded a song, but as a a Macintosh user, she couldn't even run the KaZaA software, which only runs on Windows.

With characteristic bad grace, attorneys for the RIAA members reserved the right to harass the woman in future:

"Please note, however, that we will continue our review of the issues you raised and we reserve the right to refile the complaint against Mrs. Ward if and when circumstances warrant," wrote Colin Zick, attorney for the record labels, the Boston Globe reports.

Having attacked naval cadets, students, young children and now innocent senior citizens, the music business appears not to fear the consequences of its litigation. However, it can't afford too many more cases of mistaken identity.

Choose a Religion

So you want to be rich? Then guess which religion you should choose.

Overall, the median net worth of Jewish people in the survey was $150,890, more than three times the median for the entire sample ($48,200). The median net worth for conservative Protestants (which included Baptists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh-Day Adventists, Christian Scientists, among others) was $26,200, or about half the overall average. The median net worth of mainstream Protestants (including Episcopalians, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Unitarians and others) and Catholics were similar to each other and about the average for the whole sample.

Edward Teller Quote

As a human being, I was sorry for September 11. As a political person, I thought, Thank God that they killed six thousand people rather than the president.

September 11 Misconceptions

Sunday 14th September 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

True or False:

Zacarias Moussaoui was the "20th hijacker."

We know how the hijackers seized the planes.

The Sept. 11 plotters planned to use crop-dusters for a biological or chemical attack.

All False.

Some other questions are raised here.

Shrub's Speech, Another Analysis

Bush's Speech: The War in Iraq is Not Over and Neither Are the Lies to Justify It

And from one of the longest serving MPs in Britains parliament comes This war on terrorism is bogus which is quite a good summary of Bush's plas from prior to Sept 11 2001 to today.

Just in case you're a bit slow and hadn't worked it all out for yourself already.

Text of Bush's Sept 7th Speech

Monday 08th September 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

Good evening. I have asked for this time to keep you informed of America's actions in the war on terror.
Good evening. I have asked for this time to keep the illusion that our program of World Domination is really a War on Terror.

Nearly two years ago, following deadly attacks on our country, we began a systematic campaign against terrorism. These months have been a time of new responsibilities, and sacrifice, and national resolve, and great progress.
Nearly two years ago, following deadly attacks on our country, we began a systematic campaign to stir up terrorism. These months have been a time of fewer political restraints, sacrifice from our soldiers, nationalism, and great progress for businesses such as Haliburton.

America and a broad coalition acted first in Afghanistan, by destroying the training camps of terror, and removing the regime that harbored al-Qaida.
America and a broad coalition acted first in Afghanistan, by destroying some caves, and removing the regime that tried to negotiate the hand-over of Osama bin Laden.

In a series of raids and actions around the world, nearly two-thirds of al-Qaida's known leaders have been captured or killed, and we continue on al-Qaida's trail.
In a series of raids and actions in countries too weak to stop us, we killed a couple of members of Al-Qaida, and now we've given up and are back to our program of World Domination.

We have exposed terrorist front groups, seized terrorist accounts, taken new measures to protect our homeland, and uncovered sleeper cells inside the United States.
We have stopped funding selected terrorist front groups, taken new measures to protect Das Fatherland, seig heil, and locked up some Arab looking people without charge or trial.

And we acted in Iraq, where the former regime sponsored terror, possessed and used weapons of mass destruction, and for 12 years defied the clear demands of the United Nations Security Council.
And we acted in Iraq, which we have cleverly fooled over 70% of Americans into thinking had sponsored terror, had a long time ago possessed and used weapons of mass destruction, much like us, and for 12 years defied the clear demands of the United States, even though we bombed it relentlessly.

Our coalition enforced these international demands in one of the swiftest and most humane military campaigns in history.
Ourselves with a couple of other countries only killed about as many as died in the September 11 attacks, although the death toll is rising.

Rogue State Building Bio-weapons Labs

Friday 05th September 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

With very little media attention or public discussion, the Bush administration is quietly pursuing plans to build biowarfare agent facilities of its own. The new labs will handle, modify, and experiment with some of the most harmful agents known to humanity, including live anthrax, plague, Q fever, and botulism.

Meet Daniel Pipes

Saturday 23rd August 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

"What war had achieved for Israel, diplomacy has undone," Pipes explained at a recent Zionist conference in Washington DC. "What we need to do is inspire fear, not affection.''
Pipes is a founder of Campus Watch, a website that compiles public files on college professors who are critical of Israel.
He has asserted that the U.S. had no "moral obligation" to rebuild countries like Iraq and Afghanistan after an invasion.
He has frequently declared that militant American Muslims intend to mount a second American Revolution, and impose Islamic law. "All Muslims, unfortunately, are suspect," he wrote in a recent book, though he added that only "10 to 15 percent" of Muslims are militant. If Muslims have jobs in the military, law enforcement or diplomacy, Pipes states in another column, "they need to be watched for connections to terrorism." He also finds Muslim immigration problematic: "All immigrants bring exotic customs and attitudes, but Muslim customs are more troublesome than most."

He is supported by both the core of the Republican base and the core of the pro-Israel lobby, and endorsed by groups such as the Christian Coalition, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamation League, and the Zionist Organization of America.

And George W. Bush has appointed Daniel Pipes to the board of the U.S. Institute of Peace, calling him a well respected scholar.

George W Bush is Satan.

Jewish Lobby Stifling NZ Journalism

Tuesday 19th August 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

Malcolm Evans, political cartoonist for The New Zealand Herald, has been booted from the paper after several cartoons on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, one of the more recent comparing the situation to apartheid. You won't find these cartoons on the online cartoons page of the Herald.
This follows the same pattern for cartoonists around the world.
Read more about how the Jewish lobby is stifling journalism here.
Update:Although NZ Herald has removed all traces of the cartoon from their website the cartoon can be found here.

Blackout

Saturday 16th August 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

This AP report asks Iraqis for tips to help USians in their current current shortage. All of them were useful though I liked the follow up on this one:
9: SIT IN THE SHADE. Many Iraqis go outside when the power's off. "We sit in the shade," said George Ruweid, 27, playing cards with friends on the sidewalk. Of the U.S. blackout, he said: "I hope it lasts for 20 years. Let them feel our suffering."
Personally I couldn't give a rat's arse about the power shortage in USA, other than to agree wth Mr Ruweid.

Illegal To "Support" Boycott of Israel

Friday 15th August 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

In the USA it is illegal to confirm or deny whether your products or parts are produced in Israel. This is to thwart Arab boycotts of that disgraceful country. A Kansas company was recently fined for inadvertantly informing a customer from Bahrain that no parts were sourced from Israel.

Indonesian Expansionism

Sunday 10th August 2003 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

In the West Papuan referendum whether to join Indonesia in 1969 only 1025 handpicked people were allowed to vote. "Some Indonesians wearing dark glasses, who were obviously military intelligence officers, were shown going into the midst of a sullen and silent crowd of Papuans and bringing out six men they themselves had selected to represent the community. While this was going on, Lunn [an Australian reporter] reports, the crowd suddenly began cheering as three of their fellow-countrymen at the back of the crowd unfurled banners calling for genuine elections; they were immediately arrested and taken away. When Lunn appealed to Ortiz Sanz[the sole UN "observer"] who was also present, to intervene, he refused, saying that he was simply there to observe.
