Six Apart Shoot Own Foot

Sunday 16th May 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: IT

Six Apart, creators of Movable Type - the system used to control this website, have released version 3 and now want a LOT of money for the privilege of upgrading.

Movable Type has a few shortcomings, not least of which is an integrated spell checker. The entry system is also not standards compliant (it doesn't work properly with Mozilla). Rebuilding everthing after minor changes is also a hassle - especially when you have several hundred entries.

So now I am seriously considering switching to another CMS (Content Management System), one that is open source so that I don't get stuck like this again. One with a spell checker, and able to import all my Movable Type entries. I also have a strong preference for a MySQL/PHP based system.

OpensourceCMS seems the best place to start. I'm open to ideas...

Well, MT has rethought their original outrageous position. They will be releasing a free edition. If this isn't good enough, I have read well of wordpress as a free cms.

Wordpress certainly does get good press, however it is actually about as limited as MT - only one blog per installation. This won't do for me since I run 4 blogs. If you only run one blog, and are happy with MT by all means stay with it - Wordpress won't offer you that much more. However for the reasons in he article above I have become tired with MT, and had been hoping MT3 would add features to resolve my complaints. They haven't. Instead they want to charge me. I've read widely on the subject, but everyone has differing views. I am starting to settle on B2evolution (another offshoot from B2 as Wordpress is), but I like some of the features in Nucleus. It's a personal choice, but before you decide on anything, be sure to try out the different options at OpensourceCMS.
