"Built This City" Ranked Worst

Thursday 22nd April 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: GENERAL

Blender magazine has named Starship's (nee Jefferson Starship, nee Jefferson Airplane) the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever.

I have to agree. I always felt slightly nauseated by this song which, disregarding the hideous melody, has no counterpoint. I truly hate that song, and back then could never understand why it was top of the chart for so long (back then I was too young and naive to understand how the charts were rigged).

Tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.

Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

"Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung were runners up.

hmmm, at least they were original (not condoning the sheer earache caused by Mr Cyrus) so they should get some points the derivative and formulaic pop music of contrived bands gets my vote. From current boy/girl bands and 'idol' winners, to the stock aitken waterman production line to eagles/america etc crap in the 70's, all the way back to the monkees and elvis at least billy ray and wang chung were trying something new - even if it was ultimatley the wrong direction
