Feeding the Homeless Illegal in USA

Monday 19th April 2004 | by chris [mail] | Categories: POLITICS

Police made three arrests at the Massey Park in Tampa, Florida. All were charged with trespassing after ignoring repeated warnings not to feed the homeless without a permit.

James Ronald Dunson, 19, Christopher Robert Ernesto, 40, and Amberly Nicole Banks, 22, were arrested. Dunson faces an additional charge of resisting an officer without violence when he went limp, forcing the officers to pick him up to make the arrest.

Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said the three left officers little choice.

``We've given them plausible alternatives; however, they refuse to comply with the law,'' he said. ``The police have gone to great lengths to provide them with information on where the feeding can be done legally.''

So much for Christian Charity in the most Christian Fundamentalist state. Jesus didn't need a permit!

If the homeless people being fed didn't leave a mess behind, or if those feeding the homeless would clean up, and if there were facilities (bathrooms) on the premesis, there would be no need for a permit. As you quoted here, there are plenty of places in Tampa these generous folks can help out, but they chose to ignore the laws. Not sure Jesus would approve of that.

if the people of tampa had a heart, and followed the teachings of their god, then it would not be illegal to help other people

again, it's not illegal to help people. it's illegal to feed people with NO FACILITIES nearby, and it's immoral to not follow the law.

Morals and laws don't necessarily coincide, for instance slavery was once illegal, however that doesn't make it moral. You statement, tommy, is that of a fascist, whose goverments' laws are considered devine and beyond question. That is a dangerous world to live in. Why are "facilities" so important? I often have a picnic in a park, that doesn't mean I'm going to take a shit there too. Indeed, there are rarely "facilities" available when I picnic. You are merely trying to justify laws that deliberately discriminate against the Untermensch.

not being a great biblical scholar i stand to be corrected but i believe that the jesus spoken of broke a few laws - at the very least he got quite offside with the authorities - though being persecuted for helping people and contravening current hegemony may have been a storytelling device to ensure longlasting fame
