You must supply a password to make this connection

Twice now I've had this problem on different peer to peer Windows network trying to access a Windows XP computer. It then asks for a password for \\SERVERNAME\IPC$ for which no password works.

The solution both times has been to

1) Enable Guest account
Start|Settings|Control Panel|User Accounts

2)Change the following setting:

Start|Settings|Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Local Security Policy|
then under Security Settings|Local Policies|User Rights Assignments

look for Deny access to this computer from network
right-mouse-click on this setting and choose properties, highlight Guest, click Remove.

This is as much for my reference as anyone else's. For some reason this setting is not the same between apparently identical setups (I have compared XP Pro SP1 systems). Weird.

The problem occurs when you try to access the resource of Win NT/2K/XP from Win 9x. In order to solve this problem, you must create a transparent connection. This means you must have the same set of username and password on both PCs. In addition, for WinXP you must uncheck "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" in Folder Options and must have a password for the user account. Blank password is not allowed to access the resource in WinXP.

I have tried all the things mentioned, but still no luck. I am getting that exact same error. I have identical setups on a 3 XP machines, but only one lets the 98 user share its resources.

Log on to the Win98 computer using any of the usernames with password of any of the XP machines.

Many thanks. The Guest account was already enabled but the Denial of access was the culprit.
I have a WinXP that I couldn't see from the Win98se machines on the local LAN. This machine doesn't use a password to access the network, while all the 98PCs do.
They all use NETBUI for filesharing (NOT TCP/IP) and are all on the same workgroup.
This should also fix the same problem I have at home, where 1 XP machine is flagging the same error when trying to access it from a 98PC.
Can't wait to try it

hi guys when none of above worked except netbuoi, i tried the folllowing steps
under Security Settings |LocalPolicies|User Rights Assignments
find "
Allow this computer from network"
then click add user or group then click advanced click find and add any user name displayed i selected a password protected user name click ok and login on win9x pc using this user name
i hope that'd solve the problem

3 THINGS FOR A CONNECTION WITHOUT A PASSWORD
1. Control Panel - User Accounts - TURN ON GUEST ACCOUNT
2. Control Panel - Administration Tools - Local Security Policy - Deny Access to this computer from the network - REMOVE GUEST
3. Control Panel - Administration Tools - Computer Management(Local)- Local Users and Groups - Users - GUEST Properties - UNTICK 'USER MUST CHANGE PASSWORD AT NEXT LOGON' - TICK 'PASSWORD NEVER EXPIRES' ( also tick 'User cannot change password' not necessary for connection, but better security)
